Unless you’ve been living under a
rock, you’re familiar with the GST that was introduced in Maldives in the
recent years. It’s one thing that you have to pay a huge amount for whatever you
purchase, no thanks to our economic depression, but you also have to pay extra
to the government because they just love to financially suck you dry, right? But
god forbid, you’re not one of those people who disapprove of it, because if you
do, then I hate you.
I’ve seen a lot of people whine
about GST ever since it was introduced; conspiring that it was some kind of
strategy executed by the government for the sole purpose of starving us
citizens. However, the major societal problems lie in the fact that citizens
refuse to trust the government in every matter. We should question our
authority, but to what extent? If we want the country to run smoothly, we have
to set our differences aside sometimes and not
be a pain in the ass for once.
Nobody likes having more taken than
what they bargained for, I get that, but as citizens we ought to understand
that taxes are mandatory whether we like it or not. Our government is in a
whole lot of debt in case you morons haven’t realized, which means that we are in a whole lot of debt.  You cannot draw a line in the sand and keep
the government on the other side, because we’re a democratic country, which
means that we are the government.
People seem to forget that quite often while they hypocritically preach about
democracy.
Healthcare and schooling are
pretty much free these days, so you don’t
get to whine about GST. The government has to pay for the salaries of doctors and
your medical bill, so you don’t get
to whine about GST. The government has to pay the salaries of teacher and
administrators so your kid would at least get a public school education, so no
princess, you don’t get to whine
about GST.
I’m no heiress, but when you
think about it, the GST amount is not even that much. We feel that it’s a lot
because Maldivians are the most ungrateful, spoiled people to ever walk on
Earth.
